What Weight Punching Bag Do I Need?
The recommended weight of a punching bag is half your body weight, so for instance if you weight 160lb (72.5kg) you should be looking at 80lb punching bags.
Below is a guideline for the recommended bag size for your body weight, and below a separate table for your height.
Below 140lb (63.5kg)
5 ft 8 (approx)
5 ft 5 (approx)
You should also take into consideration your height, as boxing and other martial arts generate power through the entire body, taller people can typically generate more power and as a result, need a heavier bag.
The correct bag weight however, depends on what training you are going to be using the bag for. For power-punching and strength training, you should opt for a heavy bag (100lbs+). If you are looking to work on technique, a lighter bag will work better as it will swing more and act more like a real-life opponent.
For kicking, as is typical in MMA, Muay Thai and kick-boxing, you need to be looking at heavy bags (100lb) as kicks are often more powerful than punches. Bags for kicking are slightly longer and thinner than just heavy bags for punches, as of course, you can aim kicks much lower than throwing punches, so need the bag to be lower.
Bear in mind that a heavy bag is typically hung from the ceiling but for especially heavy bags you may want to hang it on a punching bag stand to save the strain on your ceiling! Bags on a stand also allows you to move it around, such as for outdoor training.
